Walk Through Windsor

Pony Express rider Hiram Lewis named Windsor, California after England’s Windsor Castle because he said the area reminded him of the green, rolling hills around the royal estate. Nestled on the banks of the Russian River, the Sonoma County town has a family-friendly atmosphere that turns visitors into lifelong residents.

Families and Farmers

A walk through historic downtown Windsor feels like stepping back in time. The whole town is well-planned, with six community parks and numerous neighborhood parks. The town is small, with a population of just over 26,000. Families find dining, shopping and entertainment options all within walking distance.

Local farms invite families to pick flowers, pumpkins and fruit. Learn to milk a cow on a dairy tour or tour the Sonoma Marin Cheese Trail to taste some of the area’s best.

Things to Do

Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic. Every year, volunteers host a hot air balloon festival. At least 30 balloons glow and launch in the pre-dawn hours, with the main launch around sunrise. Visitors enjoy food, crafts and a children’s play area.

Wings Over Wine Country Air Show. United States and Canadian Air Force planes flown by world class performers amaze visitors year after year. A World War II aircraft, a C-17 transport and food tents are also available.

Local Breweries. While Windsor has its vineyards, wine isn’t the only option. Several unique breweries and taprooms provide opportunities for tasting and home-brew classes so you can get started making beer on your own.

Windsor Town Green. Summer Nights on the Green provide free concerts and kids movies. Visit the Windsor Farmer’s Market on Sunday mornings or shop the boutiques and jewelry stores any time.

Outdoor Opportunities. Hike the Shiloh or Riverfront Regional Parks or enjoy either on horseback. Take your dog and enjoy the lakes and redwoods around Riverfront Regional Park. Class A professional golf instructors are available at Windsor Golf Club.
