Ceiling Fan Installation and Replacement

Ceiling fans are not a one-size-fits-all proposition. We will need to take measurements to find one that fits the room where you want it installed.

What About the Fan Blades?

It’s a common misconception that more fan blades equal better airflow. In reality, the blade pitch (angle) and motor strength play a much bigger role in air circulation. In many cases, fans with fewer blades—like three—can actually move air more efficiently than those with five or more, due to reduced drag and resistance.
The blade span is another key factor: the longer the blades, the greater the airflow they can produce. For expert guidance on selecting the right fan size and setup for your space, contact your trusted Ongaro & Sons electrician.
For optimal airflow, the blades should be about eight feet from the floor. Here are two common mounting solutions:

  • Flush Mounts: If the room has a low ceiling, this is a simple and effective way to mount it. In this setup, the fan is flush with your ceiling.
  • Down Rod Mounts: In rooms with higher ceilings, down rod mounts may be necessary. A rod hangs from your ceiling, feeding the wiring to the fan. It also suspends the fan at the proper eight-foot length from the floor.

How to Use Ceiling Fans During Summer and Winter

On a warm day, you can rotate the fan counterclockwise to circulate cool air throughout your home. On a cool winter’s day, reverse it clockwise and run it at a low speed. This helps recirculate the heat that rises to the ceiling, keeping everyone inside warm and toasty.

Ceiling Fan Switches

For your comfort and convenience, there are multiple options to control your ceiling fan. Here are the most common switches:

Simple to install and simple to control, the pull chain is a classic option. Pull the chain on the fan to turn it on and off and control the blade speed.

Ceiling Fan Lights

Need some extra illumination? Your ceiling fan can come with a light fixture to brighten your space.

If the room you’re installing a fan in needs some extra overhead light or you’re replacing a socket where an overhead light is already located, this is the perfect solution. Many switches also allow you to adjust brightness, so you can set the mood and ambiance while keeping your home comfortable.

We recommend fitting your ceiling fan light with an LED bulb. LED lighting uses up to 90 percent less electricity and lasts up to 25 percent longer than incandescent bulbs.
