That produces a specific problem: not the equipment, but how the work gets from where it starts to where it needs to be.
In a modern house, routing a duct, a refrigerant line, a circuit or a drain is a question of distance. Where ducts do exist and are worth keeping, we measure static pressure before specifying anything, because efficient equipment on undersized or leaky distribution delivers its label rating and nothing like it in the rooms. Sealing accessible runs, correcting a starved return and adding zoning frequently solve complaints that no new machine would have touched.
Sizing a large old house properly
Large floor area invites a large system, and in this housing stock that instinct produces the outcome people complain about.
A room-by-room calculation matters more in these houses than almost anywhere, because the variation within a single building is enormous: a south-facing room with original single glazing behaves nothing like an interior room with three insulated walls, and a wing added in 1955 behaves nothing like the 1910 core. Sizing off total square footage averages all of that away and produces a system that is wrong everywhere at once.
Oversizing then compounds it. A system with too much capacity satisfies the thermostat quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to bring the far rooms up or to take moisture out of the air. In a large house the far rooms are genuinely far, and the result is a building where two rooms are never comfortable at the same time regardless of what the thermostat says.
Variable-capacity equipment earns its keep here more than in a small house, because long low-output running is what evens out a large building, and zoning turns a single system into something that can serve rooms with different requirements.
The climate, and the wet season

Water, and what the blend means for a large house

It was competently built for the loads of its day, and its problems now are the absence of an equipment ground, insulation that degrades with age and heat, and a design that relied on open air to carry heat away. That last point matters at a specific moment: burying knob-and-tube in blown attic insulation during an efficiency retrofit removes the cooling it depended on, so in these houses the wiring assessment comes before the insulation work rather than after it.
An ungrounded circuit has a code-recognized remedy short of a full rewire, protecting it with a ground-fault device and labeling the receptacles. That protects people properly without creating a ground. Where a full rewire is the right answer on a large house, it gets staged: kitchen, bathrooms, laundry and exterior circuits first, then the living space, so the house stays usable throughout.
Adding load starts from a written calculation. On a large property the appliance list is longer than average and often includes things a standard calculation misses, so the arithmetic is worth doing properly rather than assuming a big house has a big service.
