GFCI Outlet Keeps Tripping: What It Is Telling You and What to Check
A GFCI outlet that keeps tripping is shutting off power because it detects an imbalance that may indicate current taking an unintended path, which is the condition it exists to interrupt. Repeated trips can involve an appliance, moisture, the wiring, or the protective device itself, and which one it is takes some looking.
Quick answer. If an outlet or a cord is wet, damaged, hot, sparking or smells of burning, stop using it, keep away from any water near electrical equipment, and arrange professional help; do not reset the device or reconnect an appliance to reproduce a known fault. For a dry, undamaged installation, note what was running when the power went off and follow the manufacturer's reset instructions. If it trips again, will not reset, or has taken out outlets you cannot identify, leave the problem for a licensed C-10 electrician. Never bypass required protection.
Ground fault circuit interrupters are required in the places where water and electricity are most likely to meet: kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, crawl spaces, outdoors, and near laundry and utility sinks, among others. Those are also the places where the conditions that cause tripping are most common, which is why this is such a frequent question.
How Does a GFCI Work?
Electricity on a normal circuit goes out on one conductor and comes back on the other, and the two amounts match. A GFCI continuously compares them. When more goes out than comes back, the difference is leaving the circuit somewhere else, and the most consequential version of "somewhere else" is through a person to ground.
The device trips on a very small imbalance, far below what it takes to trip a breaker. That sensitivity is the point: a regular breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuit, and a GFCI reduces the risk of certain shocks by acting on a fraction of the current a breaker would notice. It does not prevent every shock, and it does not replace the breaker.
Which means a GFCI can trip on conditions a normal circuit would tolerate for years. Moisture in an outdoor receptacle, a damp appliance cord, a motor with worn insulation, a long circuit with a lot of connected equipment: all of these can produce enough leakage to trip a GFCI while causing no problem a breaker would notice. The absence of a breaker trip does not make the leakage harmless.

The cumulative one surprises people. Plugging in more things does not trip a GFCI the way it trips a breaker; that is a different device doing a different job. What happens instead is that many appliances leak a small current to ground as a matter of course, and a few of them running at once can add up past the threshold. The symptom is distinctive: nothing trips it alone, but a certain combination does.
What Can You Safely Check?
A GFCI can protect other receptacles farther along the circuit. Note which outlets lost power and whether the trip coincided with a particular appliance, with rain, or with the irrigation schedule. Outlets protected this way are often labeled "GFCI protected," which is why the bathroom outlet can go dead when something in the garage faults.
If the plugs and the outlets are dry and undamaged, you can unplug ordinary portable loads. Do not reach behind unsafe equipment, handle wet plugs, or disconnect hardwired appliances. Check the manufacturer's instructions before resetting. A device that resets and holds with the portable loads unplugged gives you useful information, but it does not prove the wiring is sound: an intermittent connection, a downstream wiring defect, a hardwired load or cumulative leakage can all behave differently from one attempt to the next.
If a particular appliance was associated with a trip, leave it disconnected until it has been assessed. Do not test it on an unprotected outlet, and do not keep trying to trigger the fault. Record what happened instead; the last device connected is a clue, not a verdict.
Why Does It Trip With Nothing Plugged In, or Refuse to Reset?
If the device trips with no portable load connected, the leakage may be in a hardwired or downstream load, in the wiring itself, or inside the device. Common causes are moisture in a box or conduit somewhere on the circuit, a nail or screw that has pierced a cable inside a wall, degraded insulation on an older circuit, a neutral shared between two circuits, or a GFCI at the end of its life.
A GFCI that will not reset at all may have no incoming power, a wiring problem, a continuing fault, or an end-of-life lockout, which newer devices use to stop themselves being reset once their protection has failed. Do not open the receptacle box, and do not keep resetting upstream protection to investigate. How Do You Test a GFCI?
Follow the manufacturer's testing schedule and procedure. Before you test, account for the equipment that will lose power, including anything protected downstream such as a refrigerator in the garage. With the device properly powered, pressing TEST should interrupt the protected power and RESET should restore it, as the instructions describe.
If it fails the prescribed test or shows a fault indication, stop relying on that outlet and arrange an assessment. A device with a self-testing feature still has manual checks specified in its instructions, and an unpowered device that does not react to TEST has not told you anything yet.
What Should You Never Do?
- Never hold or tape a GFCI in the reset position. The device is reporting a fault. Defeating it removes the protection and leaves the fault.
- Never remove required GFCI protection to stop the tripping. Some ordinary receptacles are protected by an upstream GFCI or a GFCI breaker, so a standard receptacle is not always wrong in a protected location, but removing the protection is, and an electrician needs to verify the arrangement.
- Never assume it is a nuisance without an assessment. Nuisance tripping exists, but so do real faults, and repeated trips need diagnosis.
- Never open a box, swap a device or trace a circuit yourself. That is work around live conductors.
- Never ignore a GFCI that will not reset. That is the device refusing to restore power to a circuit it has determined is faulted, or telling you its own protection has failed.
Where Is GFCI Protection Required?
The requirements come from the California Electrical Code, which is the National Electrical Code with California amendments, adopted through the Title 24 building standards published by the California Building Standards Commission; the model code is developed by the National Fire Protection Association as NFPA 70.
Broadly, protection is required at receptacles in bathrooms, kitchens, garages and accessory buildings, crawl spaces, unfinished basements, laundry areas, outdoors, and near sinks and bathtubs. Those are examples rather than a complete current-code checklist, and the list has expanded over successive code cycles. The protection can come from a GFCI receptacle at the location, from one upstream, or from a GFCI breaker. What Is Different in Marin, Sonoma and Napa?
If trips follow the rain. Outdoor circuits that behave through the dry season and start tripping with the first real rain point at moisture entering an outlet, a fixture, an appliance or a wiring enclosure. That is an electrical fault concern, not a weather one. Leave wet equipment alone and have the source of water entry and the installation checked; looking at a cover from a safe, dry position does not establish that the wiring inside is dry.
If your circuits run through a crawl space. Circuits routed under the house are exposed to ground moisture and to rodents. A GFCI protecting crawl space receptacles that starts tripping in winter deserves an assessment rather than another reset.
If trips follow the irrigation schedule. Sprinkler controllers, well pumps, pond pumps and landscape lighting transformers all sit outdoors on protected circuits and can take on moisture over time.
