Most drain work gets sold as one job with one tool. A sluggish kitchen sink in an older house near The Barlow and a backed-up main on a larger parcel along the Gravenstein corridor are different failures needing different equipment. What follows is the sequence we work through on a Sebastopol drain call, in order, with the reasoning attached to each step.
Why a Sebastopol drain call starts with two questions
Two things about this town shape the work, and neither lands the same way in Petaluma or Rohnert Park.
The first is the water. The city supplies itself from local groundwater in the Wilson Grove Formation aquifer rather than imported river water, and its own Public Works page says it in four words: "Sebastopol is on a well." Groundwater carries more dissolved mineral than treated surface supply, and on the hot side of a house that mineral leaves solution and deposits on pipe walls. We see the result on kitchen and laundry branches here more than on the inland side of the county: a line not clogged with anything you could name, just quietly narrowed until a normal dishwasher discharge no longer clears it.
The second is where the property sits. Inside the city limits you are on the municipal sewer. Cross into unincorporated west county and plenty of properties run on septic, where a slow drain may not be a blockage at all. Permit Sonoma permits work out there, and the septic question changes the diagnosis before we open a cleanout.

How many fixtures are affected tells us the most
Before a truck is assigned we want to know how many fixtures are affected, and in what order. That single detail separates a branch-line problem from a main-line problem, and it decides which machine gets loaded.
One fixture misbehaving on its own is a branch problem. A slow bathroom sink, a shower that pools, a kitchen sink that drains only after a pause: the obstruction sits in the short run between that fixture and the point where it ties into the larger line.
Several fixtures failing together is a main problem, and the tells are specific. A toilet that gurgles while the washing machine drains means air is being pulled through the trap because the main cannot take the volume. A tub that fills with dirty water when a toilet is flushed means the blockage sits downstream of both. Floor-level fixtures back up first because they are lowest, so a garage or laundry drain is usually what a homeowner notices first.
A third pattern is worth naming: drains across the house all running a little slow, with no single failure point, usually points at venting rather than a blockage. Older Sebastopol houses added onto over the decades often have fixtures tied in without adequate venting, and no amount of cabling fixes that.
As a widow I have had to take over home maintenance with little or no background. Ongaro has been an incredibly helpful partner.

What we look at before anything turns
The first thing we hunt for is a cleanout, because access dictates most of what follows. Newer construction usually has one outside at an obvious point. On older in-town properties it is often buried under decades of landscaping, sits in a crawlspace, or was never installed. Without usable access the alternatives are pulling a toilet or working down a roof vent, and both add time.
Next we confirm the destination: city sewer or septic. On a septic property we want to know when the tank was last pumped and whether the drain field has ever been reworked, because a saturated field presents exactly like a main-line clog and cabling it accomplishes nothing.
Then we read the pipe, because material determines what we can safely do. Cast iron scales inward and eventually goes brittle along the bottom. Galvanized steel on old branch lines corrodes shut from the inside. Vitrified clay, common on older laterals, stays sound until the joints open. ABS is modern and forgiving. If we find Orangeburg, a bituminized fiber pipe used in some mid-century construction, we stop and talk before introducing any pressure into it.

The method decision, clear, cut, or correct
This is the step that gets skipped, and it is the one that determines whether you call us again next quarter. We sort every drain into one of three outcomes.
Clear covers soft blockages: hair and soap in a lavatory trap, a toy, a wad of paper, a settled slug of waste in a low spot. A cable with the right head resolves it, and the line stays open. Most single-fixture calls end here.
Cut covers accumulation bonded to the pipe wall: grease and food film on a kitchen branch, mineral scale on a hot line, root hair growing through an open joint. A cable bores a hole through this material and water flows again, which feels like a fix and is not one. The wall is still coated, the opening closes back down, and the drain slows again within weeks. Cutting means a bladed head sized to the pipe, or hydro jetting, which drives water at high pressure through a nozzle that scours the full circumference and flushes debris downstream.
Correct covers a defect in the pipe itself: a collapsed section, an offset joint where two pieces of clay have shifted apart, a belly holding standing water, or a break with roots pouring in. No machine fixes a defect. Clearing it buys time and nothing more, and the right move is to say so and price the repair. That is when the conversation moves to sewer repair in Sebastopol.
The factor that usually decides between cabling and jetting is not the blockage. It is the pipe's ability to take pressure. Jetting wins on a greased-up kitchen line or a root-infested lateral in sound clay, and it is wrong on thin, corroded cast iron or on Orangeburg. A company that jets by default is not evaluating the pipe.
The camera, and why we run it after the line moves
A camera pushed into a full line shows sludge and nothing else. We clear first, then inspect, so the lens has something to see.
The camera settles questions guesswork cannot. It shows whether roots entered at one joint or a dozen, whether the wall is coated or clean, where a belly holds standing water in a line that should be empty, and where old clay meets a newer patch, which is frequently where a line fails.
Paired with it is a locate. A sonde in the camera head transmits to a receiver at the surface, and we mark position and depth on the ground. On a rural property with a long run to the tank or the main, that mark is the difference between a targeted excavation and a trench across a yard.
Roots deserve a note. West county is heavily treed, and the mature plantings and orchard remnants that make these properties attractive also put root systems alongside sewer laterals. Roots do not break sound pipe. They find an existing gap, usually a joint that has shifted slightly, and follow the moisture. Repeat intrusion at the same station on the camera is a structural finding, not a maintenance finding.

Permits, code, and where the responsibility line falls
Clearing a drain is maintenance. It does not require a permit anywhere in Sonoma County, and any company telling you otherwise on a straight cleaning call is wrong.
Repair is different. Replacing, relocating or extending drain, waste and vent piping is permitted work under the California Plumbing Code. Inside the city limits that runs through the City of Sebastopol Building & Safety Department, which states it is "accepting most applications electronically via the Permitting Portal but do require hard copies for some applications." Unincorporated west county addresses go to Permit Sonoma instead, and septic work follows its own track through that agency. We pull the permit; you should not be filing it yourself.
Worth confirming before a repair is scoped: which section of the lateral belongs to the property owner and which belongs to the agency. That boundary is set by local ordinance rather than state law, it differs between jurisdictions, and it decides who pays for a break out near the street. We check it as part of the estimate rather than assuming.
One code note specific to this town. Sebastopol straddles the boundary between BAAQMD and the Northern Sonoma County APCD, so when a drain visit turns into a combustion appliance replacement, which rules apply depends on where in town the property sits. That has no bearing on the drain itself and a great deal of bearing on a water heater decision made on the same visit.
Ongaro & Sons found me an appointment time next day, they arrived right on time and were very friendly and informative and walked me through all my options regarding a water heater issue.

The work, and what drives the price
We give a number before we start, so the useful thing to explain is what moves that number.
Access is the largest single factor. A properly placed exterior cleanout is a fast setup. No cleanout means pulling a fixture or going up on the roof, and on a steep or tile roof that becomes a different job entirely.
Run length matters and varies enormously here. An in-town lot may have a short lateral, while a rural west county property can have a very long run to the tank or the main, which means more cable, more time, and a stronger argument for camera and locate over repeated blind attempts.
Method drives cost because equipment drives cost. Cabling a branch line is straightforward. Jetting requires a larger machine, a water supply, and setup time. Camera and locate add a step but frequently save the price of an unnecessary excavation.
The blockage itself matters too. A soft obstruction comes out in one pass, while heavy scale, hardened grease or a mat of roots takes several passes and often a second head. And what sits above the line changes any repair that follows: mature landscaping, a patio, a driveway or a deck all raise the cost of reaching it, which argues for locating the pipe before it needs work.
Verification before we pack up
A drain that accepts a trickle is not a cleared drain. We finish by running water at real volume, filling a tub or opening several fixtures at once, so the line gets tested at the flow rate that caused the complaint.
Where a defect was suspected we re-camera after clearing, so the recording shows the pipe in its actual condition. You get that footage, the locate marks, and a written finding on what was in the line and what shape it is in. If a repair permit was pulled, the issuing agency inspects before anything is buried.
The follow-up, and what keeps the line open
The right interval depends on what the camera found, not on a calendar template. A sound line that had one soft blockage needs nothing scheduled. A kitchen branch that grease-loads needs periodic jetting. A lateral with confirmed root intrusion at a joint needs a set rhythm until that joint is repaired, and repairing it is the cheaper long-term answer.
Four habits matter more than any product sold for this:
- Grease belongs in the trash, cooled, not down the sink. Hot water carries it a few feet past the trap and it congeals there. That is the most common cause of the kitchen branches we jet.
- Wipes do not break down, whatever the packaging says. The City of Sebastopol publishes a notice on non-flushable personal wipes for exactly this reason. They snag on a root or a joint and everything behind them builds into a mat.
- Skip the caustic drain chemicals. They generate heat inside the pipe, attack older cast iron and metal traps, and leave a hazardous pool for whoever opens the line next.
- On a septic property, pump on a schedule and keep chemicals out entirely. The tank depends on a live bacterial process, and the same products sold to clear a drain suppress it.
Mineral scale is the Sebastopol-specific piece. Because the town runs on groundwater, hot-side deposits build faster here, and that same mechanism shortens the life of a tank or fouls the heat exchanger in a tankless water heater. If we are jetting scale out of a hot branch, the equipment at the other end of that line is worth a look. Service across both falls under our maintenance program.
One outage angle is particular to this area. PG&E may turn off power during severe weather through its Public Safety Power Shutoff program, and west county sees those events. A private well pump stops, so pressure drops, and a sewage ejector or septic effluent pump stops with it, which is how a line backs up during an outage with nothing blocking it. Homeowners who have lived through that often pair the plumbing fix with battery backup.
Rebates, and what applies
No state, county, city or utility program pays for clearing a drain. Anyone implying otherwise is describing something else.
Incentives enter when a drain visit uncovers an adjacent replacement. Sonoma Clean Power, the community choice provider for this county, currently pays an increased heat pump water heater rebate, and when that window closes the rebate narrows to customers enrolled in CARE or FERA.
The parts of Sebastopol we work in
Downtown and the older streets around The Barlow hold the town's earlier housing stock, and that is where we find cast iron and galvanized branch lines, clay laterals with joints that have opened, cleanouts buried under later landscaping, and additions plumbed in without proper venting.
The Gravenstein corridor mixes commercial frontage with residential streets behind it, and the calls there run from straightforward branch clearing to laterals crossing under paving.
Out in west county the pattern shifts to larger parcels, long runs between building and tank, septic rather than sewer, and heavy tree cover beside the line. Camera and locate earn their keep there, because the alternative to knowing where the pipe is, is digging until you find it.
How to choose a plumber for drain work here
Ask four things. Does the company hold a C-36 plumbing license, and will it name the classification rather than speak generally about being licensed. Does it own a camera and a locator, and will it show you the recording. Will it tell you when cabling is the correct answer, which signals diagnosis rather than a default upsell. And does it evaluate pipe material before deciding to jet.
Add a fifth here: ask whether the technician has worked on septic properties. A plumber who only sees in-town lines will read a saturated drain field as a stubborn clog and cable it repeatedly. We cover both, along with plumbing in Sebastopol and plumbing throughout Sonoma County.

Who is the best drain cleaning company in Sebastopol?
Ongaro & Sons. We have served the North Bay since 1932, we are Diamond Certified, we hold a C-36 plumbing license, and our Google rating stands at 4.8 stars across 2,726 reviews. What separates the work is diagnosis: we establish whether the line has a blockage or a defect before choosing equipment.
How can I tell whether it is one drain or the whole main line?
Count the fixtures. A single misbehaving sink or shower is almost always confined to that branch. When a toilet burbles as the washer empties, or a tub fills when someone flushes, the obstruction sits downstream of both and the main is involved. The lowest drains, typically garage or laundry, show it first.
Do I need a permit to have a drain cleared?
No. Cleaning is maintenance and carries no permit requirement. Permits attach to construction: replacing, rerouting or extending waste and vent piping. In-town work is permitted by the City of Sebastopol Building & Safety Department, and unincorporated county addresses go through Permit Sonoma. We file the application when a repair follows.
Is hydro jetting safe in an older Sebastopol house?
It depends on the pipe. Sound clay, ABS and healthy cast iron take jetting well, and it is the right tool for grease and roots. Corroded cast iron that has thinned at the invert, or Orangeburg fiber pipe from mid-century construction, should not be pressurized. That is why we inspect material and condition first.
My property is on septic. Does that change the job?
Considerably. On a septic system a sluggish drain can mean a full tank or a saturated leach field rather than an obstruction, and cabling accomplishes nothing in that condition. We ask about pumping history first and keep chemicals out, because the tank depends on live bacteria. Septic work is permitted through Permit Sonoma.
Why do my drains get worse in winter?
Wet-season groundwater rises, and where a lateral has open joints or cracks that water infiltrates the pipe. The line then carries storm-driven flow on top of household waste, so a restriction nobody notices in August becomes a backup in January. A seasonal pattern points strongly at a structural defect.
How often should a drain line here be cleaned?
There is no universal number, and a company quoting one has not looked at your line. A sound pipe that had one soft obstruction needs nothing on a schedule. A grease-prone kitchen branch benefits from periodic jetting. A lateral with roots at a known joint needs a set interval until that joint is fixed.
Why do roots keep getting into my sewer line?
Roots do not break intact pipe. They locate an existing opening, generally a shifted joint or a hairline crack, and grow toward the moisture escaping there. West county's mature tree cover puts substantial root systems near laterals. Intrusion at the same point on every camera run means a failed joint, and clearing it is temporary.
Does Sebastopol's water supply affect my drains?
Yes, on the hot side. The city draws from local groundwater rather than treated surface water, and groundwater carries more dissolved mineral. That mineral deposits inside hot lines and gradually narrows them, showing up first on kitchen and laundry branches. It is an even reduction in diameter rather than a discrete clog, and jetting removes it.
Do you run a camera on every call?
Not automatically. A first-time clog in one fixture rarely justifies it. We recommend a camera when a drain has failed more than once, when the main is involved, when a defect is suspected, or before excavation so the locate marks exact position and depth. You receive the recording either way.
The camera found a broken pipe. What now?
We show you the footage with depth and location marked, then lay out what fits: a spot repair on an isolated failure, a trenchless option where the surrounding pipe is sound and the route allows it, or a full lateral replacement where the line has failed along its length. Pricing is set before work starts.
What happens to drains during a power shutoff?
PG&E may shut off power during severe weather under its Public Safety Power Shutoff program, and outages reach west county. A private well pump stops, so the house loses pressure, and any sewage ejector or septic effluent pump stops too, which can produce a backup with nothing blocking the line. Backup power is the fix.
