Why Sonoma homeowners go solar now
Most solar projects in this valley start from one of three situations.
The electric bill grew with the house. A heat pump replaced a gas furnace, a car started charging nightly, or a home office added cooling through a hot valley summer. Consumption grew, and for homes that already have an older, smaller array, the export credits no longer absorb the difference the way they once did. Either way, the fix is a system sized to how the household actually uses electricity today.
Outage coverage. Hillside streets above the valley floor see planned power shutoffs, and a solar-plus-battery system is the way to keep a well pump, refrigeration and the essentials running through one. Getting that right is a design question, covered below, because a battery that was never scoped around the actual loads disappoints on the first real outage.
An aging array that no longer fits. Some Sonoma systems were sized in a different era by companies that no longer exist. When the electronics are obsolete or the system no longer covers the house, replacing it with a correctly sized array, often with storage added, is usually the practical path.

Why the export rules put storage in every conversation
This part reframes the whole decision. It is not unique to this city, but it lands hard here, because Sonoma Valley homes pull real cooling load on the same summer afternoons when exported power is worth least.
The California Public Utilities Commission replaced net energy metering with the net billing tariff. Any application filed from April 2023 onward lands on the Net Billing Tariff, where an exported kilowatt hour is credited at what it is worth to the grid at that hour rather than at the retail rate. Systems interconnected before then kept the older terms.
The consequence is direct. Under the old arrangement, a kilowatt-hour pushed out at noon and one pulled back at seven in the evening were close to interchangeable, so the goal was an array big enough to zero out the year. Now the value of an export depends on when it leaves, and midday summer exports are worth least. PG&E's electric vehicle rate plans put peak at 4 to 9 p.m. on EV2-A, exactly when an array is winding down and a valley house is still cooling.
So the useful question is no longer how many panels zero out the bill. It is how much of your own generation you can consume, and how you move the rest into the evening. That is a storage question, and it is why we sometimes recommend a smaller array with a battery over a larger one without.

The backup-first order
When a project includes storage, we work three questions in a fixed sequence before anyone mentions module counts. We call it the backup-first order, and it prevents nearly every disappointment we get called back for.
One: what has to stay on. Refrigerator, internet, some lighting and outlet circuits, and the sleeping rooms are the usual floor. Then the arguments start. Well pump. Air conditioning. Septic pump. Electric range. Each has a continuous draw and, more to the point, a starting surge, and a battery has a hard limit on what it delivers at once. On valley properties a well pump is very often the load that sets the whole storage design, because its inrush dwarfs its running draw.
Two: how long. A few hours of evening coverage is a different machine from riding out a multi-day planned shutoff in hot weather. PG&E's Public Safety Power Shutoff program turns off power during severe weather to reduce wildfire risk, and the hillside streets above the valley floor carry more of that exposure than the flats. Duration decides how many battery units go on the wall.
Three: then the array. Only now does module count mean anything, because the array finally has a job description: cover daytime use, refill the battery, export the remainder.
A grid-tied system with no storage shuts itself down the moment utility power disappears, deliberately, so it cannot backfeed a line a crew may be working on. Without a battery and its switching gear, a full roof of solar produces nothing while the power is out. We are also a Certified Generac Generator installer, so we lay out the alternative when it fits better: a standby generator runs as long as it has fuel and starts heavy motor loads easily, while a battery is silent and earns its keep daily by shifting solar into the evening.

The housing stock usually decides the design
The Sonoma Valley runs hot through summer, so cooling is genuine load rather than a few weeks of inconvenience. But what most often shapes a proposal in this city is not the climate. It is the electrical service that came with the house.
Around the Plaza and the older streets nearby, the housing is historic, and on those homes we routinely find services sized for a very different set of appliances: limited main breaker capacity, a load center with no spare spaces, a subpanel added sometime in the past century, and conduit paths that have to be invented rather than followed. Through Boyes Hot Springs and the Springs the picture is mixed, with small older homes and additions that changed the load without changing the service. On valley properties the constraint is usually distance, since the best roof plane and the main service are not always on the same structure.
Interconnecting solar is not a matter of finding a spare breaker. Code limits how much combined power a panel's busbar may receive from the utility and the solar system together, so a panel that is physically full or electrically maxed out forces a choice: a main breaker derate, a supply-side connection ahead of the main, or a service and panel upgrade. That is one of the largest swing factors in any local proposal. We do the work in-house, and if an upgrade is genuinely required we say so before you sign rather than after plan check. Permits, inspection, and interconnection
Solar permitting in California is not left to local discretion, which works in a homeowner's favor. The path, start to finish:
- Inside city limits, the City of Sonoma issues the permit. The city runs an online permitting platform for submitting applications and tracking reviews, reachable from its own site. Unincorporated valley parcels go to Permit Sonoma, and confirming which applies to your address is step one.
- State law makes approval ministerial. Government Code 65850.5 provides that a city or county "shall administratively approve applications to install solar energy systems through the issuance of a building permit or similar nondiscretionary permit."
- Every jurisdiction had to build a fast lane. The same statute required an ordinance "that creates an expedited, streamlined permitting process for small residential rooftop solar energy systems," and required officials to "allow for electronic submittal of a permit application."
- Structural review covers the attachment, not just the panels. Rafter spacing and condition, mount spacing, flashing method, and added load on the framing all get examined, and century-old framing near the Plaza gets examined closely.
- Layout has to leave the roof usable. We plan arrays around the access and ventilation pathways plan check expects, which on a cut-up roof decides how many modules actually fit.
- Electrical inspection covers labeling, disconnects, conductor sizing, grounding and bonding, and rapid shutdown. Labeling is where careless installs fail most often, and it is entirely avoidable.
- Storage carries its own scope, including location, clearance, and listing requirements, plus the backed-up circuit panel and transfer equipment.
- PG&E must grant permission to operate before the system switches on. Local sign-off and utility interconnection are two separate approvals. We submit that paperwork rather than handing it to you.
What drives the cost of a project here
We do not publish prices, because a number with no roof attached to it is meaningless. What we will do is name the variables that move the total, so you can read any proposal and see where the money went.
Roof type and pitch come first. Composition shingle is the straightforward case. Tile takes longer, needs specific mounts and careful flashing, and carries breakage risk repaired as you go. Some metal profiles accept clamps that penetrate nothing at all. Steep pitch adds fall protection setup on every plane.
Geometry matters as much as area. One large south-facing plane is the cheapest solar there is. Four small planes broken up by dormers, vents, and chimneys means more racking, more conduit, more labor, and often module-level electronics a simple roof would not have needed. Shading drives that choice too: the mature trees that make the older streets here pleasant are also why many arrays in this city need optimizers or microinverters.
Electrical scope is the wildcard and the item homeowners are least likely to have priced. A service with headroom is an easy interconnection; a full or undersized one means a derate, a supply-side connection, or an upgrade. Distance adds up as well: conduit from array to inverter, inverter to service, and trenching between structures when the best roof sits on a detached garage or barn. Storage is priced by how many units go on the wall, which returns to the backup-first order.
Timing counts. Doing solar alongside a re-roof, a panel upgrade, or a heat pump saves money that doing them separately does not. If budget is pacing the project, we can walk through financing as part of the proposal.
Incentives and programs, as they stand
These programs change often, so this is the picture we verify again when your proposal is written.
Sonoma Clean Power is this city's community choice provider, and its programs matter most to a valley electrification project. SCP raised its heat pump water heater rebate for a limited period, after which the rebate continues only for customers enrolled in the CARE or FERA bill discount programs. SCP's EV charger program is an enrollment program, not an installation rebate. It pays a monthly bill credit plus a sign-up bonus for enrolling an eligible Wi-Fi connected smart charger. You must be an active SCP customer and the account holder or an authorized representative, eligible devices are currently limited to WallBox and ChargePoint models, and SCP says "We are working hard to add more EV chargers to our program." The utility reduces charging speed during grid stress, and notes you "can override an event anytime." So the charger model you buy decides whether you can enroll at all, which matters because a vehicle is often the largest new load an array is sized around. Owning a solar system: what to keep an eye on
Solar is low-maintenance, which is not the same as no-maintenance, and the difference shows up around year eight.
Watch monthly production. You do not need to study it, you need to notice a step change. Catching a failed component in a month rather than at annual true-up is the whole value of monitoring. Expect the inverter to age out before the glass does, since modules usually carry far longer warranties than the electronics attached to them.
Cleaning is mostly optional in the North Bay, since winter rain does the work. The exceptions are a heavy pollen spring or a smoky stretch that leaves ash sitting through a dry month. Use water and a soft brush, never a pressure washer, and never walk on modules.
Keep vegetation back. A branch that cleared the roof at install can be shading a whole string three summers later, and trimming costs less than optimizers. Look under the array occasionally too, because birds and rodents like that shaded cavity and nesting material against wiring is a real hazard.
If you own storage, test it deliberately. Pick a calm afternoon, open the main breaker, and see what runs and for how long.
The rest of what we do in this city
We are a multi-trade company, and on solar that matters more than it sounds, because most of what goes wrong on these jobs goes wrong at a trade boundary.
Battery installation onto an existing array. Common now, for the export reasons above and for outage coverage. How involved it is depends on the existing inverter and how the backed-up circuits can be separated.

Planning for the electrification loads that are coming. This city sits fully inside the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, per Sonoma County's air quality district map, so the district's zero-NOx appliance rules apply. BAAQMD Regulation 9, Rule 6 sets zero-NOx requirements for residential water heaters, with standards that arrive by size and equipment type across 2027 and 2031, and that the district says apply "only upon burn out of one's current equipment".
What it does mean is that many homes here will add a 240-volt water heating load within a few years, and planning panel capacity during a solar project costs far less than revisiting the service afterward. Same logic for a heat pump in Sonoma replacing a gas furnace or a heat pump water heater replacing a tank.
Where we work in the valley
We serve the whole city and the surrounding valley from our Petaluma headquarters, a short run over the hill. That covers the historic blocks around the Plaza, Boyes Hot Springs and the Springs, the neighborhoods along the valley floor, and the hillside streets above them. Hillside properties tend to carry more shutoff exposure and more tree shading; valley properties more often have a well pump in the backup conversation. Same design process, different answers.
How to choose a contractor for this work
Five questions separate a proposal you can trust from one you cannot, and none require you to understand photovoltaics.
Ask who holds the license and who will physically be on your roof, because solar sales is full of subcontracted labor behind an unfamiliar brand.
Ask whether the shading analysis used measurements taken at your house or an aerial estimate. On the tree-heavy streets here the difference is large.
Ask what export assumption the savings model uses, and whether it reflects the current tariff. A model built on the old rules overstates what the system does for you.
Ask what happens to your electrical panel. A proposal that never addresses main breaker capacity and busbar rating has not priced the electrical scope.
Ask who answers the phone in year eight. A warranty is worth what the company behind it is worth, which is fair to weigh when a firm founded in 1932 and holding a BBB A+ Rating is on your list.

Will solar keep the lights on in Sonoma during a shutoff?
Not on its own. A grid-tied array is required to stop when utility power goes away, so it cannot energize a line crews may be working on. Making power while the grid is down takes a battery plus the switching equipment that isolates the house. If riding out a planned shutoff is your reason for going solar, storage belongs in the design from day one.
Do I need a battery for solar to make sense here now?
Not always, though the case is stronger than it was several years ago. Since exported power is credited at its value to the grid rather than swapped one for one, the electricity you consume yourself is worth more than what you send away. Storage lets a daytime array serve an evening household. Homes that use most of their power at midday need it least.
How long does a solar permit take in Sonoma?
We will not promise a turnaround, since that depends on the workload ahead of you. What state law guarantees is that approval is administrative rather than discretionary, that every jurisdiction runs an expedited track for small residential rooftop systems, and that applications may be filed electronically. City addresses go through the city's online platform, unincorporated parcels through Permit Sonoma.
Will my electrical panel handle solar and a battery?
Sometimes, often not without work, and we check it first. The limit is not an open breaker slot, it is how much combined power the busbar may accept from the utility and the solar system at once. On older homes near the Plaza we frequently find no headroom left. A derate, a supply-side connection, or a service upgrade resolves it.
How long does a solar installation take in Sonoma?
The roof work itself usually runs a few days. The calendar is set by everything around it: design, structural review, the permit, and PG&E's permission to operate, which is a separate approval after inspection. We give you a realistic schedule at the proposal stage, and installing alongside a re-roof, panel upgrade or heat pump project saves time and money over doing them separately.
Should I re-roof before putting solar on a Sonoma house?
If the roof has less than roughly a decade left, do it first. Taking an array off and putting it back later is a separate project with its own labor and flashing work. If the roof is newer, install on it, and make sure the racking comes apart cleanly when the roof's turn eventually arrives.
Can you add a battery to an array another company installed?
Usually yes. How simple it is depends on the existing inverter, since some pair with storage directly while others need an added AC-coupled unit. The other half is your panel, because backing up a house means separating the circuits that will run on battery from the ones that will not. That is work on the service, not the roof.
What size system should I install?
Size follows your actual usage, not your roof's capacity. We pull twelve months of consumption, add whatever you know is coming such as a vehicle or a heat pump, and design to that. Building well past your consumption is much less rewarding under current export rules than under the old ones, which is a real change in how sizing gets approached.
My array came from a company that has since closed. What now?
When an older system stops fitting the house, whether because consumption grew or because its electronics are no longer supported by any manufacturer, the practical path is usually a new, correctly sized system in its place. That one project corrects the sizing, opens the door to storage, and renews the roof attachment and flashing work. Battery or standby generator for outages?
They solve the problem differently. A battery is silent, needs no fuel, and contributes to your bill every day by shifting solar into the evening, but its run time is fixed and it has limits on starting large motors. A generator runs as long as fuel lasts and starts heavy loads easily, yet does nothing on ordinary days.
